As native Floridians, we know our way around a hurricane or two. Sure, it’s tempting to throw on some board shorts, grab a skimboard, and ride out the storm with a cocktail in hand—especially when it’s “just” a Category 3. But let’s be real: there’s a fine line between riding out a storm and putting yourself (and others) at serious risk. Spoiler alert: you don’t want to be that guy making the headlines for putting our first responders in a tough spot.
So, if you’re staying put and not in an evacuation zone, here’s your handy guide to bunkering down safely, while still keeping your cool!
Emergency Supplies Checklist
Before the winds pick up, you’ll want to stock up on the essentials. Here’s what should be on your list:
•Non-perishable food: At least a 7-day supply for everyone in your household.
•Water: 1 gallon per person, per day for a week. Hydration is key, folks!
•Medications: Have at least a one-month supply of any prescription meds.
•Batteries: For flashlights, radios, and other essential devices.
•Flashlights: Avoid candles—they’re a fire risk if winds cause damage.
•Fire extinguisher: Better to be safe than sorry.
•Sanitizing wipes/baby wipes: Especially useful if water supplies get interrupted.
Pro tip: Fill your bathtubs with water before the storm hits. Why? You can use this water to flush your toilets if the power goes out and your well pump stops working. Also, freeze ziplock bags filled with water to help keep your fridge cool when the power goes out.
Important Paperwork
Storms have a way of making the unexpected happen, so keep these documents safe:
•Personal identification
•Financial records (bank statements, insurance policies)
•Medical records
•A copy of your home’s deed and insurance info
Pro tip: Photograph and upload important documents, including insurance policies, to a secure cloud storage like iCloud or Google Drive. Store these in a waterproof, easily accessible container. You’ll thank yourself later.
Around the House: How to Batten Down the Hatches
The goal here is to keep your home as protected as possible from flying debris, heavy winds, and torrential rain. A few pre-storm tweaks can save you thousands in damage (not to mention a whole lot of stress).
1. Document your home’s condition: Video record your home and its contents for insurance purposes. Make sure you also photograph and upload important documents, including insurance policies, to a secure cloud storage like iCloud or Google Drive. This will make any post-storm claims easier and faster to process.
2. Secure loose items: Anything lightweight, like patio furniture or trash cans, can turn into missiles when the winds pick up. Bring them inside or tie them down.
3. Trim or remove weak trees: Branches can easily come crashing down on your roof or windows. Now’s the time to do some hurricane gardening.
4. Anchor down outdoor items: BBQ grills, sheds, or larger items that can’t be brought inside should be anchored securely.
5. Clear gutters and drains: Water damage is one of the biggest risks during a hurricane. Make sure your gutters and drain fields are free of debris to prevent flooding around your home.
6. Protect windows: Storm shutters are ideal, but if you don’t have those, plywood works in a pinch. Don’t forget to reinforce any garage doors—they’re a vulnerable entry point for wind.
Local Resources
It’s always good to know who’s got your back. Here are some local resources to keep handy:
•Palm Beach County Emergency Management: For official evacuation orders, shelter info, and emergency updates. You can also sign up for text alerts.
•FPL (Florida Power & Light): For real-time updates on power outages and restoration times, bookmark their storm center.
•Jupiter Emergency Services: Know your local non-emergency numbers and have the contact details for your nearest shelter, especially if you have pets or special medical needs.
