2023 Home Maintenance Checklist

The ultimate homeowner calendar including monthly home maintenance checklists to stay up to date on all your home needs

JANUARY

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Check and replace weatherstripping as needed
  • Test your sump pump to ensure it’s still functioning properly
  • Reverse your ceiling fans to clockwise
  • Clean your dryer vents
  • Test GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry room

FEBRUARY

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Vacuum your refrigerator's coils
  • Clean your kitchen exhaust hood and air filter
  • Check sinks and toilets for leaks, and make any necessary repairs
  • Check the hoses on your washing machine, dishwasher and ice maker for leaks, and replace as needed
  • Test GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry room

MARCH

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Inspect the caulk in your kitchen and bathrooms; re-caulk where needed
  • Schedule an air conditioning inspection (or perform your own inspection)
  • Inspect exterior paint and do touch-ups as needed
  • Repair or replace damaged window screens
  • Do a decluttering sweep and donate or sell old items (especially if you're planning on selling this Spring!)

APRIL

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Test all detectors to ensure they’re in good working order
  • Prune shrubs after they've bloomed
  • Inspect siding/masonry and make repairs and re-caulk around windows and doors as needed
  • Repair or replace damaged window screens
  • Inspect your roof for damage

MAY

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • If you have a garden, May is a great time to plant annual flowers and vegetables
  • Clean out your gutters
  • If you have septic tank, schedule an annual inspection
  • Inspect your foundation for any drainage issues
  • Check for drafts on windows and doors, and seal any gaps you find with weatherstripping or caulk

JUNE

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Inspect and repair sprinkler systems
  • Rotate fans back for the summer heat
  • Check and clean outdoor appliances and equipment
  • Inspect any outdoor furniture for damage, and make any necessary repairs or replacements
  • Check and clean your dryer vent

JULY

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Go through your closets, and donate or dispose of anything you no longer need
  • Check for drafts on windows and doors, and seal any gaps you find with weatherstripping or caulk
  • Clean the inside and outside of your appliances
  • Check and repair electrical outlets and switches
  • Clean and maintain carpets and flooring

AUGUST

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Inspect your plumbing for any leaks or damage
  • Check and repair any damaged walls, trim, or other interior features
  • Remove any clutter and excess items from your garage, and donate or dispose of anything you no longer need
  • Inspect your roof for any damaged or missing shingles
  •  Inspect your outdoor lighting for any damage or malfunction

SEPTEMBER

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Clean your baseboards
  • Check for and replace decaying or damaged trim around the windows and doors
  • Remove any clutter and excess items from your basement or crawl spaces, and donate or dispose of anything you no longer need
  • Inspect attic for signs of rodents, bats, roaches, termites, and other pests

OCTOBER

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Clean your gutters and downspouts
  • Look for and repair any damaged walls, trim, or other interior features
  • Inspect foundation/masonry for cracks. Hire a professional to repair as needed
  • Remove any clutter and excess items from your kitchen cabinet and drawers, and donate or dispose of anything you no longer need

NOVEMBER

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Schedule a chimney sweep if applicable
  • Seal any cracks on windows and doors
  • Remove any clutter and excess items from your office and donate or dispose of anything you no longer need
  • Service your heating system

DECEMBER

  • Clean or replace HVAC filters
  • Clean the kitchen drain/garbage disposal
  • Inspect each fire extinguisher in your home
  • Clean your baseboards
  • Winterize your sprinkler system
  • Check attic vents
  • Remove any clutter and excess toys, decorations, misc. and donate or dispose of anything you no longer need
  • Check insulation and add where needed
